North Shields Transport Hub

North Shields Transport Hub is a state-of-the-art transport hub and proudly stands as the first net zero carbon building in North Tyneside – a milestone project in which we were honoured to play a pivotal role. Novum Membranes was contracted to fabricate and supply an ETFE Air Filled Pillow roof and canopy over the transport hub. The installation features our 2 layer ETFE pillow system, comprising 41 individual pillows covering an area of 368m² over the Northern Concourse. Given the site’s coastal location and persistent issues with seagulls, Novum Structures installed a bird net over the top of the pillows to ensure long-term functionality and cleanliness. The AFP system’s extruded aluminum profiles are secured to glulam beams using steel upstands, blending both practicality and a sophisticated architectural aesthetic. The design and installation posed unique challenges, particularly with the triangular shape of the pillows.
